Creatures of Habit

Two weeks ago on a sunny summer afternoon I was sat outside a Brasserie along Marylebone High Street reading Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane when I had a most bizarre encounter. I was asked by an innocent looking twenty something year old whether I minded that he’d share my table. I looked around. All the other tables were taken so I said “sure”.

He took his seat and waited for his drink.

“Good book”, he said “I read it a couple weeks ago”.

“Yes” I said, no too bothered about getting involved in a conversation.

“A great writer. I’ve read most of his books” he continued.

I nodded in reply and continued reading. He got his drink which kept him quiet for all of 30 seconds.

“I’m Aaron. I’m sure I’ve seen you here before. Do you live near?” he asked.

“Nice to meet you Aaron. I have been here before but no I do not live nearby” I replied regrettably as that was all he needed to get going.
“Are you wearing make up?” he asked.

That took me by complete surprise. I had never been asked that before and I don’t remember being asked such an abrupt personal question by a complete stranger who I had known for all of 2 minutes. I felt like saying “none of your business and can you just get lost so I can continue to enjoy my peaceful afternoon” but instead I felt compelled to be honest, answer his question and deal with the consequences in a civilised manner.
“Yes” I said.

“I thought so but it’s not at all obvious. I mean you must know what you’re doing. I noticed because you look good, I mean unblemished.”
“Thank you.”

“Why do you wear make up?” he continued.

“I feel comfortable wearing it.”

“Are you gay?” he asked politely.

“Unfortunately that is so preconceived. We live in the 21st century. People can do whatever makes them feel more comfortable and confident about themselves as long as they’re not breaking any laws,” I replied.

“Yes but isn’t wearing make up taking things a bit too far. Shouldn’t we leave that to women?” he suggested.

“I think you’ll find women have always been ahead of men when it comes down to personal hygiene and presentation. They washed first, then men thought that was a good idea. They used moisturiser to soften their skin and eventually men followed. They started more complicated skincare routines such as face masks and facial scrubs and after a while men thought that’s not a bad idea either. In fact women used perfume long before men thought aftershave would benefit them in concealing their natural bodily odours. You see women know better than us when it comes to personal grooming so why not follow their lead but do it better.”

“Don’t you feel weird putting it on?” he asked with curiosity.

“Why should I. We are creatures of habit. When you do something a couple times and it works for you it becomes part of your routine. I get up, brush my teeth, have a shower then shave, do my hair, rub a little concealer under my eyes and finish off with tinted moisturiser all over my face. I don’t see anything wrong with any of that. Its whatever works for me and I feel comfortable with. I’d give it a try if I was you,” I said.

“Maybe. Oh got to go. Hope to see you again,” he said disappearing as quickly as he had appeared 20 minutes earlier. “Hope not anytime soon” I thought to myself. I looked up in disbelief as I saw him in the distance embrace and walk off with Kiera Knightley.

Steve McQueen: The King of Cool

October 4th, 2009

Photobucket

Almost 20 years after his death Steve McQueen is still ‘The King of Cool’. What’s more his title in not under any serious threat. The McQueen brand is frivolously exploited by advertisers the world over and the family owned company that holds his image rights continues to make handsome profits.

Terence Steven McQueen was born March 1930 in Beech Grove, Indiana, Mid-Western America. He spent most of his teenage years up to no good and after an 18 month spell at the infamous Boys Republic reform school in California, he joined the US marine corps driving tanks for 3 years. By this time he had spent far too long under the spell of authoritative figures and decided to leave to pursue his love for acting, fast cars and motorbikes. His big break came playing Josh Randall in the TV show Wanted: Dead Or Alive. Little did anyone know that he would go on to become a global icon and a movie legend. By the time the show had come to an end in 1961 McQueen had already become a bona fide film star having graced the big screen in The Magnificent Seven. His legendary status was etched in history after his starring roles in The Great Escape, Bullitt, The Getaway and Papillon.

At 5 ft 6″ and just under 11 stone what he lacked in size he certainly made up for with charisma. His smile, those pure blue eyes and his look was all he needed. He learnt very early on that less is more. He seldom spoke and kept his thoughts to himself. Two hours exercise a day kept him lean and mean. Women oozed over him and men wanted to be just like him.

How cool was MacQueen?

There is no cool scale available to measure McQueen’s coolness although knowing some of his off screen achievements will make it a little easier to judge.

1) He was good friends with Bruce Lee and had karate and Jeet Kune Do (Bruce Lee’s specially devised discipline) tuition from him. He never studied for belts but was thought to possess the skill and discipline of a third dan black belt.

2) His love of cars and motorbikes is well documented and his passion for speed scared the living daylights out of his passengers including one Bruce Lee who experienced a terrifying drive through Mulholland Drive at 140mph. He was a successful racing driver and appeared on the front cover of Sports Illustrated in 1971.

3) He just about slept with every woman he ever met including Ali MaGraw. They met whist making The Getaway and he managed to seduce her right under the nose of her then husband Robert Evans who was a producer on the movie.

4) He was a fully qualified stuntman and was made an honorary member of Stuntman’s Association of Motion Pictures in 1977.

5) He made president Nixon’s hate list and was pursued by the FBI for showing support to Martin Luther King. Way ahead of his time and most of his famous colleagues.

6) He was somewhat of a fashion guru. He knew what to wear and how to wear it. In the 1970’s when it was trendy to show off your hairy chest McQueen was often pictured with a bare chest, most probably waxed. Again way ahead of his time.

Taking everything into account, most importantly his films, Steve McQueen registers as the ultimate cool star and most definitely deserves his proclaimed title ‘The King of Cool’.

What a hero.

The Big Interview - October 2009. Justin Webb is a carpenter living and working in Dagenham, London.

October 2nd, 2009

Myego: Hi Justin. Welcome to Myego.

Justin: Hi.

Myego: You work in a macho male dominated industry. How did you get involved in wearing make-up?

Justin: To be honest I am more comfortable with the word grooming than make-up. For me it all started as a necessity more than anything. I spend a lot of time outdoors doing what I do. I suffered a lot from chapped dry hands in the winter. My mum gave me hand cream when I popped round to see her one afternoon. That worked well. Then in the harsh winter months my face got dried out real bad. I started using my girlfriend’s face cream. It worked but I didn’t feel comfortable using a girlie cream. That’s when I started looking for some proper stuff for men.

Myego: Where did you start?

Justin: Boots, cheap and cheerful. But their range is limited and most of these cheap products aren’t any good. I now buy all my grooming stuff online. You get much more choice and all the info to go with it.

Myego: It seems that you just made a natural progression from a basic product to a more challenging grooming routine.

Justin: Yeh I suppose. All men wash their face and shave. That’s one step up from cave men. From then on it varies from man to man depending on how much you care for yourself. Once I used moisturiser I got tempted into exfoliating and trying a face mask. When I saw the results and how much more fresh it made me look, why stop.

Myego: That’s excellent. You realised what difference a little more time spent on yourself actually made.

Justin: That’s it. We spend most of our lives doing things that suit us but when it comes down to looking after our skin and our bodies most men don’t even consider it.

Myego: That’s true but men are starting to wise up. And the use of cosmetics, what started you on that?

Justin: I play football in winter and cricket during the summer. With me its all about confidence. If I feel confident within myself and that starts with the way I look, then I perform better. I have no doubt about this. So before a game I do my hair and put a little gel on my eyebrows to keep them in shape. I wear tinted moisturiser to give my face a natural glow. And of course your concealer. Its great for under the eyes. It makes my face look smooth. When I look in the mirror before I go out I just feel so good about myself and that boosts my confidence, my ego and my performance.

Myego: Does anyone notice?

Justin: Obviously with my hair but not any of the other stuff. They just think I’m good looking (LOL). And so what if they did, if its good enough for David Beckham it’s good enough for me.

Myego: For sure. And finally what is it you like about Myego?

Justin: To me it’s one of the few proper men’s brand. Its simple, macho and does exactly what it says on the packet. What more can you ask for.

Myego: Thank you. We aim to please so that’s excellent feedback. We wish you the best and continue with your grooming regime. It obviously suits you well.

Justin: Thanks and please continue to bring out more quality products.

Myego: That’s what we’re here for. See you again sometime.

Big Interview: September 2009

September 9th, 2009

Every month Myego will interview someone who dares to be different. If you are interested to take part contact us.

This month’s interviewee is Jim Morris, a city boy with a penchant to have fun.

Myego: “Hi Jim. Thank you for taking part in the first ever Myego Big Interview. What exactly do you do for a living?”

Jim: “Hi. It’s an honour to be your first interviewee. My job is one of those you dream about. I work for a large financial firm in the city. I entertain clients to close deals. I spend most of my time taking clients to lunch, dinner or sporting events such as Rugby at Twickenham or Cricket at Lord’s. It involves a lot of eating, drinking and socialising.”

Myego: “That sounds amazing, a job to die for. Do you ever get bored?”

Jim: “No. Sometimes the company you hang out with can be a tad boring but it’s my job to make the day interesting. I’m never bored and I make sure that whoever I’m with doesn’t get the chance to get bored either. By the way you guys are taking a big risk in interviewing someone who works in the city. I mean we are not exactly the most popular people at present.”

Myego: “We take risks at Myego. It’s what makes us different. You spend most of your life socialising, so what do you do in your spare time?”

Jim: “You can imagine I don’t get much spare time. I go to the gym 3 times a week and catch up on sleep whenever I can. I’m not in a relationship so at weekends I spend a lot of time with my friends most of whom have settled down and started their own little families. To be honest I would love to meet that special ‘SOMEONE’ and settle down.”

Myego: “You obviously look in good shape for someone who’s always out. What your secret?”

Jim: “As part of my job it gives me a lot of confidence the better I look. The more confidence I have the more positive I am. I like to stay in shape and for someone in his mid thirties I need to be more careful than I used to. I spend my time in the gym to good effect. I usually spend 20 minutes on the rowing machine followed by another 20 on the exercise bike. After a few stretches I spend about half an hour doing upper body weights. I am very careful with my diet. I try to stick to fish and chicken with vegetables and only drink red wine or water.”

Myego: “We know you’re a fan of Myego, that’s why you’re here. Tell us a little more about your skin care routine.”

Jim: “I’ve always looked after my skin. It all started when I was sixteen and started shaving. I used to suffer badly from dry skin after shaving. That’s now going back a few years when there were no products on the market for men. A friend of mine recommended using moisturiser for my dry face. It wasn’t really something you talked about so it was more of a case of going into a department store and buying a woman’s moisturiser and pretending it was a present for my mum. It worked though. And I’ve used moisturiser ever since, every day after a shower. Obviously once you use a moisturiser you break the taboo, one thing leads to another and you start the whole routine of using a face mask and exfoliator at least once a week, stick concealer to cover the odd spot here and there. And now I have my chest and back waxed once a month. I couldn’t imagine having a hairy back. I think it looks scary.”

Myego: “You’ve come a long way then in your grooming habits.”

Jim: “It’s all part of my routine. Having my haircut, taking care of my face, having my chest and back waxed and going for a massage at least once a month. It’s all about looking good and feeling good. That in itself is such a confidence booster.”

Myego: “And finally, how did you come across Myego?”

Jim: “I came across your brand whilst searching for men’s grooming on Google. I liked your website and thought I’d try out your liquid concealer. I’ve used stick concealer in the past but I got to say I love your Cover Select. It just goes on so easy. I use it at least a few times a week. It gives your face something extra, makes you look more fresh. It sounds strange but at times I feel naked without it. Are you guys bringing out any more products?”

Myego: “We are developing some new products as we speak. We are very specific about what we want in a product. It takes a full year to get a product onto the market. I am glad you like our liquid concealer and I am sure you’ll like some of the new products when they hit the market. Thank you for taking the time to take part in our first ever interview and good luck with everything.”

Jim: “Thank you and hey, best of luck to you guys too. See you again sometime.”

Myego: “Thanks Jim. Take care.”

What’s good for women is good enough for men

July 20th, 2009

Most men still consider make-up a totally alien idea. They associate it with something women do and it’s not for them. Little do these men realise that women have been fighting for years for their right to do the things men do such as vote, play golf and join the army but when it comes to men copying what women do then men shy away. Why should women have a monopoly over the use of make-up, dieting and retail therapy when they show no remorse in evading male only territories such as boxing, wrestling and hedge fund management.

This is mostly a result of ignorance. Some chauvinist men would still argue that women are the inferior race but they have to realise that women have had the intelligence to infiltrate almost all male only activities whilst monopolising their own particular rights. Not any longer.

What we have to take into account is why women diet, pamper themselves and wear make-up. Simply because they are more self-conscious than men. It makes them feel better, healthier and more confident. Let’s not forget on average women live 10 years longer than men.

What do we recommend? We are always advocating exercise. Regular exercise helps keep all the joints and bodily parts in good order. And if you feel fit and strong you are likely to be more alert and less prone to sickness. What you put into your body is also important. Stay away from fast food, snacking and binge drinking but eat more fruit and vegetables, white meat and drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated. Try a shot of green juice or wheatgrass. Healthy body, healthy mind. And why not pamper yourself. Treat yourself to a massage followed by a facial. Take advantage of pampering time to relax, rid your mind of all negative thoughts and look forward to looking good and feeling great once the treatment is over.

Indulge in a little retail therapy. Buy yourself a nice tight fitting shirt and trousers, go home and get ready to go out for a couple of easy drinks in the evening. Splash some lukewarm water over your face and run a little gel into your hair. Your face looks fresh after the facial in the afternoon but you want to look even better. Put a faint line of Myego eyeliner below your bottom eyelash and smooth over with the tip of your finger. This will make your eyes stand out. And to give your eyes a really smooth and bright look put some Myego concealer under each eye and blend into the skin with your finger tip. This will give you an even skin tone under each eye which makes your face look smooth and silky. You look good, feel confident and you’re ready to rock. Try it and feel the difference.

Wimbledon Fever

July 2nd, 2009

 Photobucket

Unless you have been on an extended holiday in the Amazon rain forest, you’ll know that Wimbledon championships are underway and Britain finally has a realistic chance of having its first champion in over 70 years. Tiger Tim teased all his supporters for 5 or 6 years but never really threatened to lift the trophy. However, Andy Murray is in a different class. Out of all the players on the professional tour only he and Raphael Nadal have had the heart, ambition and audacity to take on the might of Roger Federer and beat him into submission.

At this year’s Wimbledon tournament the organiser’s have been kind enough to Federer to gently ease him into the final without too much trouble. And once in the final Federer is almost invincible. In fact without the existence of his nemesis Nadal, Federer would by now have smashed Sampras’ record 14 grand slam wins and be on his way to about 20 slam titles. Is Federer the greatest of the great athletes to have ever graced the game of tennis or is it by chance that a great tennis player has happened to play in an era where (not counting the injured Nadal) his opposition has paid great service by wilting away in the great man’s presence. We will never know for sure and in years to come the record books will testify that Roger Federer was one mean tennis machine. Andy Murray lost to Federer in last year’s US Open final. A year later he is more mature, physically and mentally stronger, fitter, more determined and with the support of the home crowd has a great chance to take his revenge and lift this year’s Wimbledon trophy.

So what’s in it for us mere mortals? As ever Wimbledon basking in the glorious sunshine whets the appetite for Pimm’s and lemonade, strawberries and cream and of course, health and fitness. Exercising on a regular basis, keeping fit and slim not only improves your health and well being but also boosts your confidence and strengthens the state of mind. And whilst the sun is out make the most of outdoor sports to increase your body’s natural production of Vitamin D. The benefits of Vitamin D are well documented including its role in the maintenance of vital organs such as the kidneys and the liver, a healthy immune system, as well as its anti-tumour properties helping your body fight off cancerous cells. But beware because prolonged periods in the sun without sun cream can cause skin cancer. Lancaster do a good sport range of sun cream which is sweat and water resistant.

Our advice to you at MYEGO: take a nice comfy seat with your Pimm’s and lemonade in one hand, strawberries and cream in the other, enjoy the drama unravelling at SW19 this year and start planning a little exercise of your own or with your friends out in the awesome summer sun.

5 Easy Steps To Healthy Skin

June 29th, 2009

There is only one secret to healthy looking skin and that is discipline. If you follow the following 5 steps your complexion will look a lot healthier and vibrant within a matter of weeks. Why not give it a try.

1. One of the most important things you can do for your skin is to get your cleansing routine sorted. You need to have a skincare routine. Thorough cleansing is the foundation of radiant skin. And the key to great cleansing is time and consistency. Most people spend less than 20 seconds washing their face and many only splash with water. With the build-up of oil, grime and dust this simply is not good enough and skin is in danger of becoming clogged and looking dull. Find yourself a suitable PH balanced cleanser and gently rub in on a wet face in circular motion with your finger tips. Stay away from alcohol based cleansers as they strip the skin of its essential oils.  This triggers the skin to create more oil leading to oily skin. You should also avoid soap.  Soap is alkaline and leaving it in the warm, wet conditions of the bathroom creates the perfect breeding ground for bacteria, not something that you want to be rubbing on your skin.  Not only that, but soap also strips your skin of its acidic layer. Fol   low up by using a moisturizer to keep the skin young and subtle.

2. Make time for a facemask followed by exfoliator at least once a week. Clay based masks are the best for unclogging all the pores of built-up dirt and grime. Follow up with an exfoliator to get rid of all the dead skin cells leaving the face feeling fresh and radiant. Don’t forget this is also a time to relax and reflect. Be clam and patient and for an added bonus why not put a slice of cucumber on each eye. Cucumber helps to suck out impurities from the skin and its most beneficial used around the eyes. This will leave you feeling completely refreshed.

3. Stay away from cigarettes and smoke. Smoking is well known for aging the skin. The smoke also blocks up the pores on the skin with all the impurities we are advising to cleanse your skin of. To avoid early age wrinkles and hard looking skin give up smoking.

4. Drink at least one and half litres of water a day to get rid of all the impurities in your blood stream and keep your skin hydrated. Cut down on your alcohol intake. Alcohol dehydrates the skin and overworks your liver. If your liver is working hard to filter all the alcohol in your blood stream, it has far less time to get rid of all the other impurities.

5. Exercise for at least 30 minutes every day. This could involve running, walking or stretching. Exercise helps with your metabolism and blood circulation keeping you fit, young and healthy. This will reflect in the way you feel and look.

Liquid Concealer Vs Stick Concealer

January 13th, 2009

 Photobucket

THE DAY HAS FINALLY COME WHEN STICK AND LIQUID CONCEALER FIGHT IT OUT TO SEE WHO IS THE BEST.
Let us start by saying even if your skin is clear and has no blemishes, concealer is a great tool to keep you looking young and fresh. Touching up under your eyes with concealer will help them look more alive and bright.

The Two fighters:
Let us get to know the competitors:

Camouflage stick concealers
Liquid light reflecting concealers

It has taken a long time for someone to do it but finally in 2008 Myego launched the first liquid concealer for men. Solid concealers or camouflage sticks have been around for a long time.

So what is the difference between the two?

It’s simple really. Solid concealer’s main purpose is to cover up spots, blemishes and small imperfections on the skin. They are primarily for very small areas on the face. If you need to cover larger areas like under-eye circles then solid concealers become very noticeable because of their texture making it obvious you are wearing make-up. Liquid concealer smoothly blends into your skin’s natural tone to hide away dark circles under the eyes leaving you looking fresh and healthy.

Why has it taken so long for someone to come up with a liquid concealer?
Most people think a foundation would be just as good a substitute for a liquid concealer. Well they are wrong. Foundation does not cover up under eye circles or other blemishes as well as a concealer because foundation is normally the same colour or slightly darker shade than your natural skin tone. Liquid concealer is normally lighter than your skin tone and therefore brightens up your eyes. You can not apply foundation to a small area of the face without it standing out where as a concealer blends in smoothly to cover up small areas of the face.If you are lucky enough not to need foundation but sometimes just need a ‘little something’ to brighten up your face before going out or after a late night out, this is the product for you. Myego Cover Select concealer is an easy to apply liquid concealer that refreshes and brightens your complexion giving a healthy natural look.
